This five week course, run by Fiona, is suitable for beginners as an introduction to working creatively with clay, and also for those who would like a refresher. If you’ve been on a course before you are welcome to join the course to explore and develop your skills in more depth. It will run each Thursday morning from 10.30 til 1.30 for five weeks. We will cover different approaches to handbuilding including the traditional method of coil building, using press moulds, and throwing on the wheel. A variety of ways of creating surface decoration (using slips and glazes) will be covered; exploring texture, pattern, colour and markmaking at different stages. Each technique will be demonstrated at the start, and you will be able to work on projects of your own design. There are lots of books and journals here for inspiration which you are welcome to browse while you’re here.
Small class sizes mean lots of hands on support for everyone. All materials and tools are provided, and your work will be fired for you. We would recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, and there are aprons here to use. Our friendly working studio is a not-for-profit space, where we make our own ceramic work as well as teaching, so you will be able to see our work in progress.
