Our approach to teaching is to provide a friendly and supportive environment, lots of hands–on assistance, small class sizes and to encourage individual development at your own pace.
Our scheduled courses are designed for adults who would like to learn in a real’ working’ studio.
There are courses running throughout the year- short taster sessions, one day and two day workshops and evening courses. Many are suitable for complete beginners, and some are designed for intermediate levels.
Here are some upcoming courses that have spots still available. For a complete list of what is on offer, please click below
Term & conditions for booking: only payment in full reserves a place. If minimum numbers aren’t reached for a course (which happens very infrequently!), the course may be cancelled but you will receive a full refund. If you’ve booked and need to cancel, there will be a cancellation fee charged (15% of total cost if cancelling up to 2 days before, 20% after this).
|This workshop will cover various approaches to making clay objects/vessels by hand; including coil building, slab building, simple press moulds, and surface decoration. Ideal for beginners or those who would like to advance their skills. Hand building is ideal for a relaxing approach to making unique ceramic pieces. You will be able to see some finished examples and try various processes. Fiona will fire and glaze your work for ready to collect at a later date.||
|Relaxing and fun; suitable for those who would like to brush up on their skills or would like to continue after the first block of classes held in September. We will focus on coil building, constructing forms with slabs of clay, and throwing on the wheel. We will also cover surface decoration and glazing. Rather than being set specific projects, you will be able to focus on learning techniques and then develop and make things of your own choice. Each process will be demonstrated at the start of the class. Held over 6 weeks, on Tuesday evenings from 6 until 8.||
|These one off sessions introduce you to handbuilding and decorating clay objects or vessels. Suitable for complete beginners that want a short introduction to working with clay. Small class sizes, friendly relaxed atmosphere. Classes are held in our spacious working studio. All tools and materials provided. Fiona will fire and glaze your pieces for you ready to collect at a later date. Minimum two people.||
|This popular workshop will include two different processes- throwing on the wheel and hand-made decorated tiles. Strictly limited class sizes ensure everyone gets plenty of individual tuition and time on the wheel. As well as building upon the basics of throwing and developing your skills, you will be able to make a group of unique tiles using simple decorating techniques. Your work will be fired and glazed for you ready to collect at a later date.||
The level and type of support can vary; from tuition, technical input or advice. In some cases we can make work commissioned by you for your project. So far we have worked with students of product design, sculpture and textile design, and professional printmakers, painters and textile designers.
If you are studying art or design, want to work with clay, but have no ceramic department, we can provide support and facilities for your project. Both Fiona and Chris have taught in art colleges and universities.
If you are a professional artist or designer we can also help you realise your ceramic project. This can be for small and longer projects, and includes an initial discussion and helping you put a work plan together, with as much technical support as required.
These services are booked in advance via email or phone. Included is temporary workspace, use of tools, firing and practical support. For those with no prior experience of working with clay, individual tuition is available. Materials and firing are extra. We have a range of materials in stock, or you may wish to order your own.
You can also have work made for you if appropriate for your project: commissioned work is priced individually on request.
You may arrange a visit to the studio first to discuss your project. Mainly available Tuesday to Friday, 10-4, with occasional Saturdays and evenings available.
For basic project support we charge £12 per hour. This is untutored; if you need one to one support or tuition this will be charged at £22 per hour. Payment is by invoice at monthly intervals, and a deposit is required before the start of project which will be taken off your final bill.We have a minimum cost of £30 per project. For those with no prior experience of clay, a minimum of 2 hrs individual tuition is required at the start.
Examples are shown below of some of our previous client’s work made at the studio. From left to right- Slip cast cups by Fiona McIntosh of Tessuti; porcelain and silver jewellery by Hannah Leigh; and ceramic tiles with decals by Hannah Clarke.
If you want to work independently and have some prior experience, you can hire the space for a few hours and have use of the wheel, work bench, and have your work fired.
Materials are provided (earthenware clay and glazes), and some technical support if needed. If you would like to work with porcelain or stoneware there will be an extra charge. You can combine this service with individual tuition if required. To book, please contact Fiona to arrange a time and day. Time slots must be booked in advance, and you can book several sessions at one time. This service is aimed at keen amateurs who would like occasional use of the studio; for professional artists or students please see the Student and Professional support section.
The current price is £15 per hour inclusive of materials and firings. Payment is on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis at each session.
We offer individual tuition, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some prior experience. You could focus on throwing, handbuilding or glazing for example. Ideal for those who want some focused input or need more flexibility. Available days are Tuesdays to Saturdays. To discuss your requirements or to book some tuition please contact Fiona. The current price is £26 per hour, inclusive of materials and firing.
Can’t find a course at a time to suit or want something specific? We can run a tailored workshop for between 2 and 8 adults. Current prices are: £35 per person for 2 hours, £42 for 3 hours and £75 per person for 5 hours. This includes materials and firings.
If you are an art teacher or tutor, and would like to develop your ceramic skills or learn new ones, we can provide bespoke tuition. This could be for a day, a couple of hours or over several sessions. You may wish to attend a scheduled course in addition. We have worked with various educators from schools and colleges to help them pass on knowledge to their own students. To discuss your requirements please get in touch.
We are happy to discuss commissioned work, and have both carried out numerous commissioned projects from award pieces to student projects. Get in touch to arrange an initial meeting.
