Our approach to teaching is to provide a friendly and supportive environment, lots of hands–on assistance, small class sizes and to encourage individual development at your own pace.
Our scheduled courses are designed for adults who would like to learn in a real’ working’ studio.
There are courses running throughout the year- short taster sessions, one day and two day workshops and evening courses. Many are suitable for complete beginners, and some are designed for intermediate levels.
The level and type of support can vary; from tuition, technical input or advice. In some cases we can make work commissioned by you for your project. So far we have worked with students of product design, sculpture and textile design, and professional printmakers, painters and textile designers.
If you are studying art or design, want to work with clay, but have no ceramic department, we can provide support and facilities for your project. Both Fiona and Chris have taught in art colleges and universities.
If you are a professional artist or designer we can also help you realise your ceramic project. This can be for small and longer projects, and includes an initial discussion and helping you put a work plan together, with technical support as required.
These services are booked in advance via email or phone. You may arrange a visit to the studio first to discuss your project (which we would recommend). Included is temporary workspace, use of tools, firing and practical support. For those with no prior experience of working with clay, individual tuition is available. Materials and firing are extra. We have a range of materials in stock, or you may wish to order your own. Please note: firings are only carried our for work made at the studio; we don’t offer a kiln hire service.
We now have a plaster lathe for design projects. To use this you must have prior experience of working with a lathe and plaster, or you can arrange an induction/individual tuition. This is priced separately (see below).
You can also have work made for you if appropriate for your project: commissioned work is priced individually on request.
These services are mainly available Tuesday to Friday, 10-4, with occasional Saturdays and evenings available.
For basic project support we charge £12 per hour. This is untutored so you will need to be able to work independently.
If you need one to one support or tuition this will be charged at £22 per hour. Payment is by invoice at monthly intervals, and a deposit is required before the start of project which will be taken off your final bill.We have a minimum cost of £30 per project. For those with no prior experience of clay, a minimum of 2 hrs individual tuition is required at the start. Materials are extra.
For plaster lathe hire/use of the mould area, this is charged at £26 per hour. To include an hour induction, this will be £40 per hour.
Examples are shown below of some of our previous client’s work made at the studio. From left to right- Slip cast cups by Fiona McIntosh of Tessuti; porcelain and silver jewellery by Hannah Leigh; and ceramic tiles with decals by Hannah Clarke.
If you want to work independently and have some prior experience, you can hire the space for a few hours and have use of the wheel, work bench, and have your work fired.
Materials are provided (earthenware clay and glazes), and some technical support if needed. If you would like to work with porcelain or stoneware there will be an extra charge. You can combine this service with individual tuition if required. To book, please contact Fiona to arrange a time and day. Time slots must be booked in advance, and you can book several sessions at one time. This service is aimed at keen amateurs who would like occasional use of the studio; for handbuilding, press moulding or wheel throwing. For professional artists or students please see the Student and Professional support section.
The current price is £15 per hour inclusive of materials and firings. Payment is on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis at each session. If you book a session and don’t turn up, you may be charged for the session.
Available days/times are Tues-Fri 10-4, occasional Saturdays and evenings.
We offer individual tuition, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some prior experience. You could focus on throwing, handbuilding or glazing for example. Ideal for those who want some focused input or need more flexibility. Available days are Tuesdays to Saturdays. To discuss your requirements or to book some tuition please contact Fiona. The current price is £26 per hour, inclusive of materials and firing.
Can’t find a course at a time to suit or want something specific? We can run a tailored workshop for between 2 and 8 adults. This can focus on wheelthrowing with handbuilding or handmade tiles, handbuilding or monoprinting for example.
Current prices for two people are: £40 per person for 2 hours; £50 per person for 3 hours, and £82 per person for 5 hours. This includes preparation, materials, glazing and firings.
Prices for 3 – 8 people are: £35 per person for 2 hours, £42 for 3 hours and £75 per person for 5 hours. This includes preparation, materials, glazing and firings.
To arrange a workshop drop us an email and we can choose a day and time to suit. You’ll be invoiced a few weeks in advance of the workshop, and payment needs to be in advance.
If you are an art teacher or tutor, and would like to develop your ceramic skills or learn new ones, we can provide bespoke tuition. This could be for a day, a couple of hours or over several sessions. You may wish to attend a scheduled course in addition. We have worked with various educators from schools and colleges to help them pass on knowledge to their own students. To discuss your requirements please get in touch.
We have both carried out numerous commissioned projects over the years. This has included award pieces, student projects, work for other artists, bespoke functional ware for corporate/private clients, and sculptural pieces. Chris has specialisms in wheel throwing, printing, slip decoration, model/mould making and casting. Fiona specialises predominantly in handbuilding, print, application of surface imagery, and also occasional wheel thrown work. We are happy to discuss commissioned pieces, and either make work to your design or something of our own creation incorporating your ideas and vision. Please get in touch to arrange an initial meeting, and we can discuss your project and how it might take shape. Commissioned work is priced individually on a project by project basis.
