Ceramics: thrown and handbuilt vessels

This one day workshop, run by both Chris and Fiona, will offer an introduction to two contrasting approaches to constructing pots: throwing on the wheel and handbuilding.  We will guide you through planning and making unique vessels using these two techniques, and can show you examples of our work. Suitable for complete beginners and those with a little prior experience who would like to build upon their skills. We will start with looking at designing your pieces. Chris (who specialises in tableware) will demonstrate and assist you on the wheel, with each student getting one to one hands on support to make functional pots. Fiona will guide you through the construction of handbuilt pieces using the coil building process; this is ideally suited for one-off decorative pieces. Decoration (for the handbuilt pieces) will explore markmaking, textures, patterns and application of colour using slips. The wheelthrown pots will be glazed for you and you will be able to choose a colour for these.

It would be useful, but not essential, to bring along some images for inspiration to help you in deciding what to make. We’ll take a short break for lunch, so feel free to bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee provided.

Your work will be fired and glazed ready to collect a few weeks later. You will receive an email when the pieces are ready and then will have a month to collect your pieces.

£85 per person, inclusive of materials, preparation and firings.
